How do you want to feel today? Peaceful, supported, loved, appreciated, joyful, confident, hopeful…? Own your power. Recall a moment you felt that way. Let yourself feel it again. Breathe it in. Let it expand. Bask in the goodness. Instead of waiting on conditions or others to create those feelings for you, go within… and choose them yourself.

🌿Don’t Give Your Power Away

The other day, I found myself in a phone conversation with someone I love that took a sharp turn into negativity.

Suddenly, they were on the attack, speaking from a disempowered, blameful space.

✅ Gratitude practices have been shown in fMRI studies to light up reward centers in the brain, supporting long-term emotional well-being and satisfaction.

✅ Feeling good improves social intelligence, making it easier to connect, communicate, and navigate relationships with compassion and clarity.

I got pulled into their perspective, into judgment, blame, and feelings of unworthiness.

I left that conversation feeling drained, upset, and disempowered.

✅ Neuroscience shows that positive emotional states activate your prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for clarity, creativity, and wise decision-making.

Even though I knew better, I had let someone else lead my focus because I care about them.

Immediately after I hung up the phone, I showed up for myself.

I played what I call The Opposite Game:

How do I feel? → How do I want to feel?

Judged → Appreciated
Hopeless → Hopeful
Worried → Optimistic

We all get thrown off track sometimes, so normal, so human.

We all give our power away at one time or another to others, to circumstances, to fear.

✅ Positive emotions calm the amygdala, reducing stress and anxiety.

I’ve let other people’s political fears stir up my own.

I’ve spiraled into doubt, overwhelm, and “what if” scenarios.

✅ Positive emotions release dopamine and serotonin, your brain’s feel-good chemicals, which boost resilience, motivation, and even healing.

And in those moments, it can feel like all the higher truths and hopeful perspectives vanish.

But they don’t really.

They’re still here.

✅ Barbara Fredrickson’s Broaden-and-Build Theory shows that feeling good actually expands your awareness, helping you access new ideas, solutions, and strength over time.

We just have to reach for them.

✨ Feel-Good Reset Practice

Best done when you catch negative feelings before they escalate out of control.

A simple but powerful way to reset your energy when you’re feeling bad

Get the Guidance

Notice and name your feeling: sad, disappointed, worthless... Be curious and loving with this step.

Keep it simple, gather the information and step back

Ask yourself: How do I really want to feel? Don't pretend you like feeling bad

Even if a part of you insists on: staying upset, justifying why someone doesn’t deserve your good feelings, arguing for why you should feel this way, or wanting to analyze your way out of it...

Recognize the deeper higher truth, you prefer to feel good, and feeling good works better

✅ Repeated experiences of positive emotion rewire the brain through neuroplasticity, making it easier over time to
access those states and create healthier mental habits.

If you forget, why feeling good works better, ask questions like:

Which feels better when I feel ...

Which one works better when I'm in ...

Fear or hope?

Judgment or appreciation?

Reliving a wound, or remembering when I felt supported and strong?

Ask yourself how you truly want to feel. Go Directly to the Good Feelings

Search for a memory that matches how you want to feel. Or if you're able, just go to the good feelings. Bask in them. Breathe them in. Let them soften your mood and turn things around.

✅ Positive feelings improve heart rate variability, a key marker of emotional flexibility and stress resilience, supporting your overall cardiovascular and nervous system health.

Repeat Again and again and again and again.

This takes lots and lots of practice.

But you’re worth showing up for.

Because feeling good is a worthy goal.

Because feeling good leads to better thoughts, better actions, and better outcomes.

✅ Studies show that positive moods improve immune function, helping your body recover faster and fight illness more effectively.
