Hello Beautiful Sharon,

Yesterday I was reminded how quickly fear can close us off and negatively affect our health.

I went with my husband to a doctor's appointment for his sciatic pain.

We walked into the appointment hopeful for some help. We walked out feeling worse.

After discussing the possible diagnosis, most of the conversation centered on what could be wrong and the additional tests she recommended. As the appointment went on, his body tightened, his pain intensified, and hope gave way to fear. He became closed off to taking any further action.

By the time we got home, he didn't even want to think about it.

"I just want a beer," he said.

That day, I used my self-hypnosis to calm down. Then I felt inspired to research his test results using other trusted medical sources.

The additional information gave us a much more balanced and hopeful picture.

The facts hadn't changed. Our perspective had.

The research put the results into perspective. It acknowledged the concerns while also highlighting the encouraging findings and the practical steps he could take next.

As we talked, the tension left his body, and he was ready to move forward.

The situation hadn't changed. His nervous system had.

Research has consistently shown that when we're under stress, our brains shift into survival mode. In the moment, stress can increase muscle tension, heighten pain, narrow our focus, and make it harder to think clearly. Over time, chronic stress can also take a toll on our physical health.

When we're overwhelmed, we're far more likely to seek relief than solutions. We freeze up, procrastinate, overeat, mindlessly scroll, pour a glass of wine, or put off the very actions that could help us feel better. These aren't character flaws. They're common responses to an overwhelmed nervous system.

This is one of the reasons I love self-hypnosis. It helps calm the nervous system, easing the shift from fear back to hope, so you can move forward again.
